What Are Binaural Beats? Evidence, Uses & Limits

Binaural beats are an auditory illusion produced when slightly different tones are presented separately to each ear. Researchers have studied them in areas including anxiety, pain, sleep and cognition, but that research should not be stretched into claims about attracting money.

What research has examined

Recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses have reported potentially beneficial effects in some anxiety, pain, sleep and cognitive settings, while also noting heterogeneity, small samples or low-certainty evidence in parts of the literature.

What that evidence does not show

Evidence concerning anxiety, pain or cognitive tasks is not evidence that binaural beats generate financial opportunities, alter luck or cause money to appear. Those are materially different claims.

How to read frequency marketing

When a commercial program invokes theta, alpha or another frequency band, ask whether the cited evidence actually studied the promised outcome. Matching scientific vocabulary is not enough.
